Notebooks
A notebook is a workspace with its own sources, chats and Studio outputs. Learn how to create, switch between, rename and delete notebooks in better-vault.
A notebook is a workspace for one topic, course or project, with its own sources, chats and Studio outputs.
The notebook screen
The buttons at the top left open Settings and Create, which opens the Studio. In the Chat tab, a History button sits beside them. The notebook's name is at the top centre; click it to switch notebooks or to create, rename or delete one.
The tabs at the top right switch between Chat, Sources and Studio. In the Chat tab, the prompt bar at the bottom holds the model picker and the Sources and Web switch.
Create a notebook
Choose New notebook on the notebooks page, which is the app's home, or from the name menu. Your next step is to add sources.
Chats and History
A notebook can hold several chats. Open History to see them grouped by day. From there you can open an older chat, rename or delete it, or start a New chat.
Delete a notebook
Open the name menu and choose Delete notebook. This removes its sources, chats and outputs for good, so export a backup in Settings → Data first if you may want them back.
Self-hosting
Deploy your own copy of the better-vault web app on any Node.js host or on Vercel, with optional environment variables that harden public deployments.
Sources
Add PDFs, Markdown and text files, web pages or pasted text to a notebook in better-vault, then choose which of those sources the chat and the Studio use.
